History of the Building
It’s not surprising that Clarence Hollow; located about 12 miles east of Buffalo, is called the "Antiques Capital of Western New York". The hamlet, which is in the oldest township in Erie County, has managed to maintain more than artifacts from the past. Many of its historic buildings have been preserved as well.
The town of Clarence, when it was established in 1808, included the entire northern portion of the county including the city of Buffalo.
The Hollow Bistro was the first school in Clarence and the first Private School in Erie County. Rebecca Hamlin was the first Schoolmistress. Having moved to Clarence in 1805, the Hamlin’s were among the first settlers in Clarence. This building was further up on Main Street and was moved to its present location around 1886, to make way for the railroad. In 1886 it was converted into a hardware store. Then, in 1910 this building became the Clarence Bakery, run by Jacob Wagner and his wife Bertha.
The Wagner’s raised their family upstairs form the bakery. In fact, their daughter Viola also raised her 2 sons here and lived here until she passed in 2006 at the age of 93.
Years later, the Clarence Deli was established here and became widely known for its fresh baked rolls and sandwiches. In 1992 the deli was purchased by the Yu Family and the business was moved next door and has become the hub of the Clarence Hollow.
The Heart of the Hollow Ice Cream Parlor opened its doors here in 1994 and was owned and operated by Kathy Yu. Much of the décor of the Ice Cream parlor replicated the original charm of Jake Wagner’s bakery in 1910.
2010 The Heart of the Hollow was extensively remodeled into what is now The Hollow Bistro and Brew run by proprietor Katie Yu.
